Sanitary Fairs



           The ladies organizing committee for the New York Sanitary Fair of 1864 gathers for a commemorative portrait. The fair raised more than a million dollars despite internal dissension: rival committees of men attempted - as a Sanitary Commission member put it - to "thwart, snub, insult and override the ladies committee."
