Major Gen. Stephen D. Ramseur won Jubal Early's admiration for the way his "courage and energy seemed to gain new strength in the midst of confusion and disorder". Ramseur's wartime bride, Nellie, was his first cousin and the daughter of a wealthy North Carolina planter. During the summer of 1864, she was awaiting the birth of their fisrt child.
