The daughter of Sen. Harris, she was engaged to Maj. Henry R. Rathbone when they were the Lincoln's guests in their box at Ford's Theatre on the night of the assassination. They wed in 1867, but their future was scarred by Rathbone's inability to forgive himself for failing to protect Pres. Lincoln. Ultimeately, his anguish drove him mad. In 1894, he murdered Clara, and spent the rest of his life in an insane asylum.
