Unknown New Orleans Octoroons

These portraits, published as cartes de visites under the title "Slave children of New Orleans" purported to show quadroon or octaroon children who had been freed. Abolitionists thought the white appearance of the children made them more effective as antislavery propaganda. Proceeds from the card sales went into an education fund for black children.
