You will notice these marks " ~ * " preceeding some of the names. Since Mark and I turned out to be related, things got chaotic in the file, so, the " ~ " means that this person is Mark's direct line ancestor, a " * " means they are Mariah's, and the common ancestors will show both marks.

You will also notice a set of numbers in the birth records area. These are a system of individual identification numbers for direct ancestors only. The first number in the set ( "1" - "2") is the number of the generation going back from Mariah. The second number is that persons place in that generation, ie: Gen. 4 has 8 people, these will appear as 4-1 thru 4-8. By the time you get through 25 generations, the numbers become unwieldy, so there is a shift back to unmultiplied numbers at generations 26, 51, 76, 101, 126 and 156. When there are more than one line of descent, the numbers follow the line with the most generations in it, and, when Mark's lines merge into Mariah's, her numbers are used for the double continuations, as this system was used on her tree first and then carried over to Mark's tree. Ignore them, use them, feel free to adopt the sytem. It works well for following the direct bloodlines through the forest of multiple sibling descents, multiple marriage descents, multiple descendent trees, and "skipped" generations" in any of the forementioned.

To generate your own numbers: 1-1 is you ; 2-1 is your father, 2-2 is your mother; 3-1 is your father's father; 3-2 is your father's mother; 3-3 is your mother's father; 3-4 is your mother's mother. Notice that all men have uneven numbers, all women have even ones. To generate the further numbers without trouble, "X"-4709 is the next generation, for 17-"Y", multiply the indiviual's number "2" by 2, this gives you his mother's number. Subtract 1, and that is his father's number. They may have to be changed if you later find a longer line of descent from someone. It works, try it!
