Notes for John Hiett

Thus, in 1756, John Hiatt sold the 200 a. he purchased in 1737 fromStephen Hollingsworth an
d removed to Rowan County, North Carolina.
Frederick Co. Deed book 4, p. 104 - 31 May 1756: John Hiatt, to JohnJude, 200 a. houses
, buildings, etc. lying on east side of Elk Spring, athead of Opequon Creek, part of 470 a. p
atented to Stephen Hollingsworth,3 Oct. 1734,
and conveyed to John Hiett by deed 17-18 April 1737. Witness R.Worthington, Edward Thomas, an
d John Smith. Signed John (his mark X)Hiatt, Margaret (her mark X ) Hiatt.
John Hiatt and his wife and family had settled in 1756 -57 in thefast growing Quaker set
tlement of New Garden, which was at that timeincluded in Rowan Co., North Carolina. until th
e formation of GuilfordCo. in 1770, from parts of Rowan and Orange Co.
In 1757, he purchased 632 a. of land on Deep River, near the presenttown of Jamestown i
n Guilford Co., NC. (Rowan Co. Deed book 2, p. 192: 20July 1757 -- Zebulon Guantt, wheelwrigh
t, and Esther Guantt, to JohnHiat, planter,
632 a. consideration of 120 p. of Virginia money.
In 1760, 1761, John Hiatt deeds these 632 a. to three of his sons,Joseph, George, and Jo
hn., and appears to have returned to Virginia soonafter executing the above deeds, and settle
d on the plantation which hehad just purchased from his son George in Hampshire Co., Va.
, a tract of659 a. incl. 50 a. extra by recent survey, also some waste land inFrederick
Co. tract had been granted to John Hiatt by Lord Fairfax, 6 July 1761.
In 1763, John Hiatt sells the 300 a. he was granted when he firstcame to Virginia in th
e Alexander Ross Colony of 1735. (Frederick Co.Deed book 7, 3 May 1763: John Hiatt and wife M
argaret of Hampshire Co.Virginia to William Burns of Frederick Co., VA two small adj. tract
s ofland on north side of Opequon Cr. first 300 a patented to John Hiatt 10Nov. 1735, joins l

Adam Steven's land, now Paul Williams' land, other tract , 77 a. ,granted to John Hiatt by Lo
rd Fairfax 7 July 1761, lying on west bank ofOpeckon, signed John Hiatt (his mark) and Margar
et Hiat.
A few months before his death, John Hiatt purchased 200 a. of landin Frederick Co., Virg
inia and returned to Frederick from Hampshire Co.,where he died in the vicinity of Smithfield
, now Middleway, now JeffersonCo., WVA.
The witnesses to his will were resident of the Smithfield community. Fromdeeds mentioned abov
e,and from land mentioned in his will, it isascertained that altogether, John Hiatt Jr. posse
ssed during thislifetime upwards of 3000 a . of land in Pennsylvania, Virginia and NorthCarol
ina.
Will of John Hiatt, Jr. (Will book 3, p. 242, Frederick Co., VA):
In the name of God Amen. I John Hiatt, of the county of Hamshear andcolony of Virginia bein
g sick and weak of body but of sound and perfectmind and memory thanks be to God for the sam
e and calling to mind theuncertain estate of this transitory life, and that all flesh must yi
eldunto death when it shall please Almighty God to call. Do make andpronounce this my last wi
ll and testament in the manner hereaftermentioned.
Primas, and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into thehands of God who first ga
ve it to me and my body to be decently buried inthe Earth in a Christian like manner, and t
o what trancery estate theLord has been pleased to bestow upon me in this trancetory life

the manner following.
Item. My will and desire is that all my Just debts and funeralExpenses be first paid ou

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Evan Hiatt 222 a. of landlying in the county of Ha
mpshear and on a branch of the North River ofCapcapon and being part of a tract of 272 a. I b
ought from my son GeorgeHiatt, and being the upper part on which house and plantation is on

Item. I give and bequeath to my said son Evan Hiatt a tract of landof about 25 a. survey
ed for my and returned unto the right honourableThomas Lord Fairfax' Land Office, adjoining t
on the upper or east side ofthe aforementioned land a place called the Sandy Ridge. And to hi

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son James Hiatt 50 a. of land partof a tract of 272 a
. which I have before given and bequeathed to my sonEvan Hiatt, and to his heirs and assign

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Jonathan Hiatt one certaintract or survay of lan
d lying in the county aforesaid, and on the branchaforesaid which was survayed for one Jame
s Buckhanan, and be me purchasedof the said James Buckhanan for which I have his request to t

Thomas Lord Fairfax for the deed to Issue in my name and to his heirs andAssigns forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Timothy Hiatt one certaintract of land lying in th
