1 _FACT4
2 PLACE King of the Franks of Yssel 448 - 458

In 448, he was proclaimed king at Tournai and reigned for 10 years as thefirst official Kin
g of France. This dynasty warrents comparison with theByzantine Empire for its literacy an
d culture. Sons of this dynasty werenot "made" kings, they were automatically regarded as suc
h from their12th birthday on. There was no public ceremony of anointment, nocoronation of an
y kind, power was simply assumed by sacred right. But,while the King was the supreme authorit
y in the realm, he was neverobliged - or even expected - to sully his hands with the actual b
usinessof governing. He was essentially a ritualized figure, a priest-king, andhis role was n
ot necessarily to do anyhting, simply to be.
Even after thrie conversion the Christianity, the Merovingianrulers, like the patriarch
s of the Old Testament, were polygamous. Onoccassion they enjoyed harems of Oriental proporti
ons. Even when thearistocracy, under pressure from the Church, became rigourouslymonogamous
, the monarchy remained exempt.
"... an ancient use of polygamy in a royal family of such rankthatits blood could not b
e ennobled by any match, however advantageous, nordegraded by the blood of slaves...
